Weather in the far northwest has been quiet this week, and relatively wind free, so the cold temperatures have not been a huge problem. Further south , however, it has been more active, as those of you in the Twin Cities can attest! Bird sightings have not included a lot of species, but for most, they are birds we all hope to see in the winter.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan report that the EASTERN TOWHEE is still coming to the feeders of Jeff Schultz near the town of Ottertail. For information on how to view this bird email jschultz@lakesplus.com . Dan also reported more than 100 TRUMPETER SWANS along CR 108 east of Ottertail on December 13 ; 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were also in the area.
Marshall Howe saw 10 RED CROSSBILLS in Hubbard County near Little Sand Lake on December 11.
In Becker County , Ron Morton saw a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Detroit Lakes on December 9. A flock of over 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was also seen in Detroit Lakes by Beau Shroyer on December 16 Joel Arndt reported a GREAT HORNED OWL near Floyd Lake on December 12, while an AMERICAN ROBIN was seen by Beau Shroyer in Detroit Lakes on December 13.
Emily Hutchins , reporting on Polk County sightings on the weekend of December 9 to December 12, observed GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, BALD EAGLE, HORNED LARKS, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, many SNOW BUNTINGS, and heard COMMON REDPOLLS , all along CR 102 between Crookston and Fertile near the Chicog WMA.
In Pennington County, Shelley Steva reported 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Thief River Falls on December 12, and an AMERICAN ROBIN on December 14.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County found a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK feeding on a deer carcass on December 11 , and 75 to 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in the town of Lancaster that day.
Beth Siverhus saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Roseau County along MN 11 east of Salol on December 8 and 6 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen along MN 11 six miles west of Warroad. A NORTHERN SHRIKE visited the feeders of Carol Parker in Warroad on December 6.
Last, but definitely not least, Dave Alexander reported that NORTHERN HAWK OWLS are quite numerous this year. Last weekend, the banding team found 7 of them from Kelliher to Baudette along MN 72, one along Lake of the Woods CR 1, one along MN 11, and 4 in the Roseau Bog area. This includes owls in Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, and Roseau Counties. One SNOWY OWL was banded on the west side of Baudette about a quarter mile north of MN11 on the Wheeler's Point Road. Interestingly, no GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen.
Take note that the northern CBC's in Roseau, Beltrami Island State Forest, and Baudette will be held on January 1-2-3 this year, and all are welcome to come. Please let me know if you are interested and I can supply dates and times of meeting places.
