It has really felt like spring in the northwest this week, but not warm enough yet for most of the cold weary residents. Birds however seem to have caught spring fever, and courtship is going strong. Even some nest building is getting going. Maggie Anderson at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge reported that the refuge has been ice free since April 24. Let's hope it stays that way for awhile.
Larry Wilebski reported that a pair of LONG-EARED OWLS are nesting two miles north of Lancaster in Kittson County.
Maggie Anderson at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Maggie Anderson reported a late SNOW BUNTING on April 20 at the refuge. On April 22, there was a FOX SPARROW at the headquarters feeders; a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW appeared on April 26, and EARED GREBE on April 27. A TRUMPETER SWAN pair is at Mud River Pool, and SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen along CR 7.
Shelley Steva and I took a drive in Pennington County on April 24 during which we saw several a TURKEY VULTURE, several MARBLED GODWITS and a COMMON RAVEN carrying nesting material in the eastern part of the county.
Several BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen in Red Lake County on April 24.
Bruce Flaig heard RUFFED GROUSE drumming in southern Polk County on April 22. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks saw several PINE SISKINS at her feeder on April 26. Shelley Steva and I found an AMERICAN AVOCET at the rice paddies in eastern Polk County on April 24. Also seen there was a wide variety of duck of most of the common species,many TUNDRA SWANS and a few TRUMPETER SWANS.
In Clay County, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported TREE SWALLOWS at the Ponderosa Golf Club on April 26.
On April 22, Beau Shroyer reported that BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were still to be seen in Detroit Lakes, Becker County. Steve Midthune reported a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Lake Park on April 23. Other species seen in Becker County this week included HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, SWAMP SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported CHIPPING SPARROW in Menahga on April 24, and 15 RED CROSSBILLS in Park Rapids on April 27. A late COMMON REDPOLL was seen on April 24.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County reported 8 HORNED GREBE, BROWN THRASHER, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on April 26. 75 migrating SANDHILL CRANES were observed by Richard and Gloria Nord near Vergas on April 23.
