Summer is hanging back here in the northwest - even some frost in spots was seen this morning. Breezes are cold, even though the sun is now shining. We hope for warmer weather soon. Migration seems stalled with all the NW and NE winds.
I went to the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County today, May 26, where I was able to find 15 species of warblers including one CONNECTICUT WARBLER, 3 of 4 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, and several BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS.
Larry Wilebski had a report with photos verified of a LAZULI BUNTING in Lancaster, Kittson County, this week. It may have left, but Larry is still looking for it.
13 species of warblers were seen in southeast Pennington County on May 24 including at least two GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS. 75 DUNLIN were found on a small sandbar in one of the rice paddies in the southern part of the county. At home in Thief River Falls, an INDIGO BUNTING came to our feeders on May 25.
Ron Fischer in East Grand Forks, Polk County, reported that there are two eaglets in the BALD EAGLE nest there. On May 24, I found a singing CONNECTICUT WARBLER south of Gully along a gravel road that winds through the gully for which the town was undoubtedly named.
Another CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found by Connie Norheim at the Pioneer Park in Moorhead, Clay County on May 22. Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported that the BALD EAGLE nest near Downer has two eaglets.
Mark Otnes found a CONNECTICUT WARBLER at Dunton Locks County Park in Becker County on May 22. Dave and Betty Hochhalter had SCARLET TANAGER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in their Becker County yard this week. Katie Haws reported that Hamden Slough NWR is attracting some shorebirds this week including 100 DUNLIN, 6 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 10 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and two WILSON'S PHALAROPES. Steve Midthune reported a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE two miles north of Lake Park. MARBLED GODWIT and SEDGE WREN were seen at Hamden Slough NWR.
Marshall Howe reported COMMON NIGHTHAWK, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, CANADA WARBLER, and SWAMP SPARROW in Hubbard County this week.
From Douglas County, John Ellis reported both RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and WILSON'S PHALAROPES at the Osakis wastewater treatment ponds this week. On May 21, he observed 18 species of warblers in Douglas County, including one CERULEAN WARBLER. Other species seen included YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, and COMMON RAVEN.
