A little rain , and in some places a lot, has fallen in the last week, so things are looking greener. With lots of folks out surveying and atlasing, interesting birds are being reported. Dickcissels are apparently having a good year in the area, in keeping with the drier start to the nesting season. In Becker County Beau Shroyer found a DICKCISSEL in the Detroit Lakes north industrial park on June 11 and subsequently a second one was found there. Beau also found a LARK SPARROW on the south side of Big Detroit Lake in the Timber Creek development on June 12. Ron Erpelding found SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER at Hamden Slough NWR near the headquarters on June 12. A VENT tour group found a skylarking SPRAGUE'SPIPIT at Felton Prairie in Clay County on June 8. The bird was seen as recently as June 12. Directions are to park at the first fence north of the windmills, then walk east along the fenceline to the metal pipeline post. Joel Schmidt also reported several CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS about a half mile north of the Sprague's pipit. Frank Gosiak observed MARBLED GODWIT, UPLAND SANDPIPER, DICKCISSELS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and LE CONTE'S SPARROW there on June 10. Ron Erpelding observed two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, and several DICKCISSELS in Norman County. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen southeast of Ada. In Mahnomen County, Ron found two DICKCISSELS just before CR 10 turns east about a mile west of Mahnomen. In Polk County, Russ Wilbur found a DICKCISSEL at the East Grand Forks greenway. Here in Pennington County east of Thief River Falls, an AMERICAN REDSTART appears to be singing on territory in our yard near the Red Lake River. Lynda Knutsen reported from Agassiz NWR on June 7 that a brood of AMERICAN GOLDENEYES was seen at Kelly Pool. Marshall Howe saw a DICKCISSEL in southeast Clearwater County on CR 29 just east of CR 2 two miles from the Beltrami County line. BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and BOBOLINK were also seen in the county. Ron Erpelding reported WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER at the Bagley wastewater treatment ponds on June 12. Gary Huschle and I in the course of a BBA survey in western Beltrami County, found a COMMON LOON with two young, TURKEY VULTURE, BROADWINGED HAWK, SANDHILL CRANE with a colt, BARRED OWL, WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, several GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, NORTHERN PARULA, MOURNING WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, a nesting SWAMP SPARROW and an INDIGO BUNTING. Larry Wilebski called on June 13 to report a DICKCISSEL in Kittson County on the Tombstone Highway about two miles from its west end on the south side of the road. On the weekend a visiting birder saw the following species in the vicinity of Larry's cabin northwest of Lancaster: GRAY PARTRIDGE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, LONG-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL,WHIP-POOR-WILL, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, EASTERN TOWHEE, and LE CONTE'S SPARROW.
