This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 23, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. This has been a very pleasant week in the northwest. Days have been warm, not hot, and not very windy. Bird migration appears to be moving along. Interesting have been the sightings of red crossbills in almost areas in the state. Cleone Stewart reported on a field trip of the Detroit Lake Bird Club to Tamarac and Hamden Slough NWR's in Becker County on August 16. Among species seen were COMMON LOON, TURKEY VULTURE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, nine species of shorebirds, presumably most at Hamden Slough, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. Sandy Aubol reported 15 RED CROSSBILLS in the cemetery in Crookston, Polk County on August 18. They were still there on August 19, and other species seen included several RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. On August 19, Shelley Steva and I saw COOPER'S HAWK, and EASTERN BLUEBIRD there, and also a WESTERN KINGBIRD along US 75 a few miles north of Crookston. At East Grand Forks on August 18 were COMMON NIGHTHAWK, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and YELLOW WARBLER. Joanne Johnson reported around 200 SANDHILL CRANES at the impoundment north of the Audubon center on August 19, and at the center there were YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, AMERICAN REDSTART, MOURNING WARBLER, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. Heidi Hughes reported COMMON NIGHTHAWKS there on August 22. AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS and GREAT EGRETS were still present at the impoundment. The impoundment is now open to driving on a gravel loop on top of the dike along part of the impoundment. Shelley Steva found 24 RED CROSSBILLS in the cemetery at Red Lake Falls in Red Lake County on August 20. Other species seen included OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CANADA WARBLER, and SCARLET TANAGER. In Pennington County on August 20, Shelley saw a NORTHERN CARDINAL in Thief River Falls. Several RED CROSSBILLS were also seen on the outskirts on the city. Tonight , August 23, 12 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were circling over our yard just east of the city. Marshall County birds seen by Shelley Steva on August 20 included AMERICAN BITTERN , COMMON NIGHTHAWK, MARSH WREN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and 51 RED CROSSBILLS. In Kittson County on August 23, Boni Fossell reported three families of WILD TURKEYS, each with 6 young, frequenting the back yard of a farm 10 miles northwest of Karlstad. She reported that these turkeys have been local residents for at least 5 year, visiting the yard often.
