This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 2, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. The hot muggy weather of the past two weeks has considerably dampened the desire to go birding, and the reports are showing it. We have had a few reports this week however, and the weather has improved somewhat, but much of the area is still short of rain, and the heat continues. Jim Graham at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County reported a brood of 9 northern pintails on the refuge on July 19. I was out on July 28 in Pennington County where I found sedge wrens and Le Conte's sparrows still singing. Perhaps they are going to re-nest. In Polk County on July 28, the both sedge wrens and Le Conte's sparrows could be heard, and several pairs of northern harriers were seen. Bob Dunlap reported a prairie falcon in Todd Township of Hubbard County on July 27. On July 25, Bob found a buff-breasted sandpiper at the Walker wastewater treatment ponds in Cass County. From Otter Tail County, Alma Ronningen reported that the ospreys fledged two chicks on August 2. A pair of trumpeter swans near Dent have 3 cygnets. Other species seen in Otter Tail County included some wild turkeys with young, and sandhill cranes. Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Bob Dunlap, and Jim Graham for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, August 9, 2012.
