Summer conditions have arrived, at least as far as rain goes, but cool temperatures persist, and the migration is winding down. It does seem to be a bit behind schedule however - no surprise in the light of all the cold and wet conditions along the migration route.
Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in Dorset on June 3. There were many flycatchers - OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN KINGBIRD, LEAST FLYCATCHER, and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER.
Sandy Aubol reported that the BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS that she reported in East Grand Forks were still there on May 30. For directions contact Sandy who may be able to give you an update. On June 3, she had COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and MOURNING WARBLER in her yard in addition to the usual residents. Bob Dunlap saw a single CACKLING GOOSE flying with 20 CANADA GEESE over Lake Sarah just west of US 59 on June 4. Emily Hutchins found a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and many AMERICAN BITTERNS at Glacial Ridge on June 6.
In Pennington County, Bob Dunlap found what may have been the same geese seen earlier in Polk County - a single CACKLING GOOSE with about 20 CANADA GEESE flying over the Thief River Falls WTP on June 4. Tom and April Ballard heard a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling about 15 miles southeast of Thief River Falls as recently as June 4. Here near Thief River Falls, a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER was in the yard on June 2, and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on June 3.
A male LARK BUNTING was seen along the north side of Thief Lake in Marshall County about 2 miles east of 240th Avenue along Thief Lake Drive on May 28.
Thanks to Bob Dunlap, Emily Hutchins, Marshall Howe, Sandy Aubol, and Tom and April Ballard for their reports.
