The season's are changing in the northwest as late last week it was extremely hot and muggy, and in a day we went to cold and windy. Migration seems to be getting underway now, and Kim Eckert's MOU birding weekend group saw an incredible 143 species on the weekend despite the weather being far from ideal most of the weekend.
Marshal County finds by the group included SWAINSON'S HAWK, PHILADELPHI VIREO at Old Mill State Park, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the Warren WTP, and a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Alvarado, all on September 2.
The Thief River Falls WTP in Pennington County provided 14 species of shorebirds. A NELSON'S SPARROW was at the gate all weekend, and other species seen there included lots of BOBOLINKS, several HORNED GREBES, and a pair of pale MERLINS. In St Hilaire on August 31, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and DARK-EYED JUNCO were seen. Both SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL were seen on both sides of the Pennington-Red Lake County line. WILD TURKEYS were seen west of Thief River Falls.
Heidi Hughes reported a PEREGRINE at the Brandt Angus impoundment in Polk County on August 31. At the Parnell impoundment along CR 17 just east of US 75 were an OSPREY and two TRUMPETER SWANS. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks on September 3 saw a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a PALM WARBLER in her yard. On the 4th, there were 5 species of vireo, 10 species of warblers, and a SCARLET TANAGER. Also seen was a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET along the Red Lake River Greenway.
Roy Zimmerman reported a BLUE-HEADED VIREO in Mahnomen County on September 2 on the way home from the weekend trip.
Thanks to Heidi Hughes, Kim Eckert, Sandy Aubol, and Roy Zimmerman for their reports.
