This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 11, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Baby birds are everywhere in the northwest, and adults are looking frazzled as they try to keep the mouths full and quiet! Summer has arrived in earnest, and we hope it won't leave us for weeks, though it could be a tiny bit cooler.
Beth Siverhus reported from Roseau County this week where she saw a MERLIN nesting at the Roseau Hospital, and in Warroad, a long list of species including RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN THRASHER, and a GRAY CATBIRD with young. At Lake of the Woods, the COMMON TERNS have young, and BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen. There was a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the feeder of Kris Guggisberg. Elsewhere in the county Beth saw AMERICAN BITTERN, SEDGE WREN, SWAMP SPARROW, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER among others. On July 5, Beth found MARBLED GODWITS and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS on one of her priority blocks.
From Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Gregg Knutsen reported that more LEAST BITTERNS than usual are being heard around the refuge. One place where one could hear them, and maybe be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one is south of Lost River Pool which is east of Farmes Pool along the township road. They have also been heard at Parker Pool. A few CATTLE EGRETS have been seen at Agassiz NWR and a SANDHILL CRANE with colts was seen last week. I have a report of a LONG-EARED OWL nest along CR 6 west of Middle River, but have not been able to contact the landowner yet so have no exact location.
In Red Lake County, Shelley Steva and I found LARK SPARROWS near the intersection of MN 92 and 230th Ave SE east of Brooks. A GRAY PARTRIDGE walked off the gravel road just south of the intersection of 210th St SE and 240th Ave SE.
Mark Otnes found a SPOTTED TOWHEE at the southwest corner of Buffalo River State Park in Clay County on the main hiking trail southwest of the swimming beach. Cross the bridge and go east to the first clearing where the bird was seen on July 7. Craig Mandel was at Felton Prairie on July 4 where he found most of the usual residents. In addition to the CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS along the road just north of the cattle guard, he found two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES at the north end of the road through Felton Prairie . Other species seen included UPLAND SANDPIPER, HORNED LARK, about 300 BARN SWALLOWS, VEERY, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, BOBOLINKS, and ORCHARD ORIOLES.
Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Craig Mandel, Gregg Knutsen, and Mark Otnes for their reports.
