Another mild week has passed, and now we are into the cold again tonight. No snow has fallen in the northwest this week and in all but the sheltered locations, what we had has melted. Sightings are still coming in of snowy owls ,even from the southern parts of the state , so we will have them with us awhile longer as they move north.
From Lake Carlos State Park in Douglas County, Benjamin Eckhoff reported 8-12 COMMON GOLDENEYE, a BARRED OWL, and a BALD EAGLE this week.
In Glendalough State Park in Otter Tail County, he observed TRUMPETER SWANS, CANADA GOOSE, MALLARDS, and a BALD EAGLE.
Steve Midthune saw a MERLIN in Lake Park in Becker County on January 26.
Several SNOWY OWLS were seen in Polk County this week. One was seen about 5 miles north of CR 21 on 390th St, and three more were observed in the vicinity of Sherack on January 24. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen in the town of Crookston on January 24, and COMMON RAVENS were also seen in Polk County.
Anita Vettleson saw a SNOWY OWL along Red Lake CR 1 about 7 miles east of US 59 on January 24.
In Pennington County, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER is coming to our feeder east of Thief River Falls occasionally. Several WILD TURKEYS and a BALD EAGLE were seen in western Pennington County on January 24.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL reported earlier in Marshall County was seen on January 24 along 350th St a few poles west of CR 12, about where it was first spotted on December 18.
On January 20, Benjamin Eckhoff reported COMMON RAVENS and more than 500 AMERICAN CROWS along the railroad tracks that run beside MN 11 in Lake of the Woods County between Williams and Baudette .
