Those who like cooler weather should be happy this week, as the temperatures were in the forties last night. Winds have been brisk also. The state flower is in decline now , but a few can still be found, particularly in shaded areas. Few reports have come in this week so this report is a day late. Yards have been busy this week with young birds everywhere.
The Minnesota Birding Weekend led by Kim Eckert found 124 species under sometimes trying conditions in Norman , and Polk Counties last weekend. In Norman County, highlights were a TUNDRA SWAN , GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, WILD TURKEY, an EARED GREBE at the Ada WTP, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the Gary cemetery, and several DICKCISSELS. A great find was a LEAST BITTERN at the Agassiz-Olson WMA.
In Polk County, they found an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK at the Erskine WTP, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, WILD TURKEY, MARBLED GODWIT, and, a BARRED OWL at the Fertile nature center. A WESTERN GREBE was found at Oak Lake near Erskine, and a HENSLOW'S SPARROW was seen along CR 44 about 3 miles south of CR 45. Other species found in Polk County included a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Fertile, EASTERN TOWHEE, LARK SPARROW, DICKCISSELS, and a NORTHERN CARDINAL.
In Pennington County, I observed two RED-TAILED HAWKS perched this afternoon along Johnson Drive. In the yard there was a fly over COMMON RAVEN, and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER returned after an absence of several weeks.
