This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 10, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

There was no update of this Report last week because of the lack of bird sightings, but since the previous update 2 weeks ago a few sightings of note from Duluth and vicinity have accumulated.

Scattered WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL reports continue to come in, as they have since this species started showing up in late June. Today a small flock flew over the Lakewood Pumping Station in Duluth; Dave Benson reports they have been seen recently in Gooseberry Falls State Park in Lake Co; two weekends ago some were found in the Sax-Zim Bog area along St Louis Co Rd 133, just W of U S Hwy 53; and last week another White-winged in Sax-Zim was along Co Rd 52, 5 mi W of Co Rd 7 or 1/2 mi E of Owl Ave. At this last location a BOREAL CHICKADEE was also seen.

A couple reports of RED CROSSBILLS have also been received: Lars Benson saw some today in Duluth along Chester Cr just N of 8th St; and there was a report last week by Ele Colburn and Susan Seymour over in Cass Co at the Turtle Lake cemetery, which is just S of Whipholt.

Of interest is the second-hand report received of a SWAN seen last weekend at Mud L in Duluth. The observer reported it as a Tundra Swan, although no description was given, and at this time of year either a Trumpeter or Mute swan would be more likely than a Tundra Swan.

Terry Wiens reports that LE CONTE'S SPARROWS are still singing in various fields just N of Duluth in Lakewood Twp. One place to listen for them is along the Lester River Rd in the vicinity of Beyer Rd.

Not much in the way of fall migration has been noted yet in this area, although a few warblers and other passerines are now being banded at Hawk Ridge by Dave Grosshuesch, and the annual counting and banding of raptors at the Ridge will begin next week. Mid-August is also the time to expect a large migration of nighthawks moving down the North Shore and through Duluth -- single-evening counts in the 1000s can normally be expected each year.

Few reports locally of migrant shorebirds have come in thus far: in Lake Co Jim Lind has seen a few this month in Two Harbors on the rocks behind the old lighthouse, and Dave Benson reported a couple species last week along the lake shore at Gooseberry Falls. Note that currently there appears to be some water being pumped into the main impoundment at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier area; this location has been good over the years for shorebirds, but it had been mostly dry since last year.

The next scheduled update of this Birding Report will be on Thursday, August 17, although if there is little or nothing to report next week the next update may not be until 2 weeks from now, on the 24th.
