This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, November 8, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Once again last weekend there were numerous significant finds in Duluth and elsewhere in northeastern Minn, especially the 5th-state-record YELLOW-BILLED LOON at Mille Lacs L. There were several other rarities found as well, including PACIFIC LOONS, ROSS'S GOOSE, HARLEQUIN DUCK, ICELAND GULL, some early SNOWY OWLS, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, and NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD.
The Yellow-billed Loon was found Sunday Nov 4 on the east side of Mille Lacs L, and it was relocated by other observers on the 5th and 6th in the vicinity of Hunters Point and the Lakeside and Liberty Beach resorts, which are all near the Mille Lacs - Aitkin county line. No one has apparently reported seeing it yesterday or today. Elsewhere on Mille Lacs, a female or immature Harlequin Duck was found Nov 5 on the southwest side of the lake: along Mille Lacs Co Rd 35, about 1.5 miles NW of the Hwys 169 and 27 jct.
There have been no fewer than 4 recent Pacific Loon reports on L Superior: on Nov 3 at Iona's Beach SNA in Lake Co, on the same day at Ray Berglund wayside rest in Cook Co, 2 individuals on Nov 5 near McQuade Rd in Duluth, and today between the Shorecrest Supper Club and Stoney Pt.
A Ross's Goose was in the Duluth harbor area Nov 3 at Hearding Island on Park Pt, and this bird was relocated yesterday west of here in the harbor along Railroad St.
That 1st-winter Iceland Gull was still present in the Grand Marais harbor Nov 4.
A few more early Snowy Owls have been reported: on Nov 5 at Knife River, on the same day along Hwy 61 near McQuade Rd, and 3 individuals were seen earlier this week at Northshore Mining Co in Silver Bay.
A late and unexpected Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was found Nov 2 in Knife River along West 2nd St, but no one could relocate it on the 3rd. Also in Knife River, a Townsend's Solitaire was still present along Skiff Landing Rd Nov 3.
A N Mockingbird was seen and heard singing Nov 2 in Duluth in the neighborhood of 13 West 8th St, which is just W of Mesaba Ave, and this bird was still present there on the 6th.
Other birds of note reported recently include: a TRUMPETER SWAN at the 40th Ave West area in Duluth Nov 2-4; BLACK SCOTERS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and LONG-TAILED DUCKS seen on various days and locations on L Superior and the Duluth harbor area; a late WILSON'S WARBLER in Knife River Nov 3 and a late CLAY-COLORED SPARROW the same day in Grand Marais; and NORTHERN CARDINALS at 2 North Shore locations -- one was still in Knife River Nov 3, and another was found Nov 4 in Croftville just E of Grand Marais.
Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on Nov 15. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
