This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 4, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Jackie Potts reported a male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the Sax-Zim area on Cty Rd 52, a half mile east of 203.

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported from Hunters Park and the East Hillside. A flock of over 200 was near the cathedral on the 3rd.

New spring migrants this week include SANDHILL CRANE on the 28th, a HOODED MERGANSER on the 29th, COMMON GRACKLE and TRUMPETER SWAN on the 30th, and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Grand Marais on the 31st. Several observers noticed that there were more AMERICAN ROBINS in Duluth this week than were here over the winter.

The West Skyline Hawkwatch tallied 2101 raptors of 13 species through April 1. They saw a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on April 2.

Bill Marengo reported two singing BOREAL OWLS in Cook County on the 29th. The birds were on Forest Rd 170, 6 and 8 miles east of the Sawbill Trail. He also heard NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS along this road.
