This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 12th, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was still in Two Harbors on the 8th at South Ave and 2nd St. There are also BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Two Harbors and a late RUSTY BLACKBIRD at 2nd Ave and 3rd St.

Karen Sussman reported two GREAT GRAY OWLS in the Sax-Zim area on the 5th, one on Hwy 7, approx 2.5 miles north of the sod farm and one on Stone Lake Road (Cty Rd 319) approx .5 mile from Cty Rd 7.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are fairly abundant so far this season. Craig Mandel reported them from five locations along Lake Cty Rd 2 on the 9th. He also noted EVENING GROSBEAKS at feeders in Isabella.

In Duluth, on the 11th Mike Hendrickson found WILSON'S SNIPE near the intersection of Ridgewood and 32nd Ave E.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 14th. Counters and feederwatchers are needed. If you see unexpected birds at your feeders or elsewhere on Saturday, please report your sightings to Jim Lind at jimlind@lakenet.com.Note that there will also be Christmas Bird Counts in Two Harbors, Carlton County, and Grand Marais over the weekend.

This report will be updated on Sunday evening the 15th to report on the results of area counts.
