This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 9th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The fall songbird migration continues this week, with 16 warbler species reported by Peder Svingen on the 9th at Park Point in Duluth, including seven GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS and a record-high fall count of 78 NASHVILLE WARBLERS. Dave Grosshuesch has banded migrant YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS, and MAGNOLIA WARBLERS at Hawk Ridge in Duluth during the past week. He also saw a flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fly overhead on the 8th.
Mike Hendrickson found two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the 4th along the 6th fairway at the Grandview Golf Course in Proctor, as well as two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS on the 7th fairway. Dave and Sarah Grosshuesch found a WILSON'S PHALAROPE at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area on the 8th. They also saw two STILT SANDPIPERS and several LESSER YELLOWLEGS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. Dan Badger reported two BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS on the 4th at the Park Point soccer fields.
John Ellis found an EARED GREBE and two RED-NECKED GREBES in Cook County on the 4th at the Cascade River State Park wayside on MN Highway 61, and five unidentified SCOTERS at the Good Harbor Bay overlook. On the 6th, John saw a HORNED GREBE at Five Mile Rock northeast of Grand Marais and two more at Cobblestone Cabins northeast of Tofte. He also found two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 4th near the end of the Gunflint Trail (CR 12), 0.2 mile east of CR 81, and a flyover flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on the north side of Oberg Mountain.
