This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 10th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Peder Svingen found a first-cycle IVORY GULL at Canal Park in Duluth on the 7th. The bird was observed on ice floes for about two hours before flew off. If accepted, this would be the 11th state record and the first since 1991. At least three first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULLS and a first-cycle THAYER'S GULL were seen on the 10th in the Duluth harbor at Canal Park.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found on the 5th by Marilyn Robertson in Duluth at the intersection of Blackman Avenue and McFarlane Road. Nate Popkin found a SNOWY OWL on the 4th at the Duluth Port Terminal along Helberg Drive, between Garfield Avenue and Port Terminal Drive.
As many as three GREAT GRAY OWLS have been reported along the Nichols Lake Road, between 0.25 and 2.0 miles east of CR 7 in the Sax-Zim Bog. Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen on the 10th along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.9 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 9th along CR 7, 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL has also been seen along the Sax Road (CR 28), between CR 7 and the Admiral Road (CR 788). Kim Eckert found a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK on the 9th along the McDavitt Road.
AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS have been seen at several spots in the Sax-Zim bog, including the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.7 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28), the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) zero to one mile north of CR 133, and the Admiral Road (CR 788) just north of the Sax Road (CR 28). A feeding station along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) 1.2 miles north of CR 133 has been hosting EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS, a HOARY REDPOLL, and a BOREAL CHICKADEE. Cathy and Bob Andrini found a flock of about 150 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the Lutheran church in Meadowlands on the 4th.
A VARIED THRUSH and BOREAL CHICKADEE are being seen regularly at a feeder in the eastern part of Duluth, and birders are welcome to look for it. The only request of the homeowners (Christina and Dave) is that birders need to call first for directions to the house and to say when they would be coming: the phone number is 218-728-0808. Mike Hendrickson found a flock of 75 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 5th near the intersection of East Calvary Road and the Howard Gnesen Road in Duluth. Shawn Conrad found flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Carlton County on the 7th along the Soo Line Trail at Moose Lake.
A SPRUCE GROUSE was found on the 5th along Lake County Road 2, 1.3 miles south of the Sand River. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Two Harbors on the 5th along 1st Street near 3rd Avenue, and at Stoney Point on the 7th. A HARRIS'S SPARROW was found on the 5th in Two Harbors at 226 4th Avenue. Dave Grosshuesch saw two BOREAL CHICKADEES on the 7th at the junction of Forest Highway 11 (CR 15) and CR 2, and three along FR 406 (CR 204), about a half mile south of Forest Highway 11. Norma Malinowski found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the Little Lake Road (FR 429) 0.5 mile west of the Birch Lake Dam.
Dale Yerger found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 4th in Aitkin County along MN Highway 200, 0.7 miles west of mile marker 183 near the Rabey tree farm. An AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen on the 6th along Kestrel Avenue (CR 27), 3.7 miles south of Lawler. SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were found on the 6th south of Tamarack along 420th Street, 1.8 mile west of Kestrel Avenue (CR 16).
Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were still present on the 7th near the mouth of the Lester River in east Duluth. Two HORNED GREBES were also seen on the 7th along Scenic Highway 61, 0.5 mile west of the Nokomis Restaurant. Sparky Stensaas found a HOODED MERGANSER on the 8th in the open water behind the WLSSD plant at 27th Avenue West.
