This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 17th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Several gulls were found in the Duluth harbor near Canal Park on the 12th, including more than 1,500 HERRING GULLS, 18 GLAUCOUS GULLS and at least two THAYER'S GULLS counted by Peder Svingen. Kim Eckert also found a second-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the same day. An unidentified dark-mantled gull showing characteristics of Slaty-backed Gull was seen on the 10th and again on the 12th.

Chris and Cindy Edwardson found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 13th at the Rose Garden along London Road near 10th Avenue East. It was seen as recently as the 17th along the Lakewalk near 9th Avenue East. A VARIED THRUSH and BOREAL CHICKADEE continue to be seen at a feeder in east Duluth. Anyone interested in looking for the birds should call the homeowners (Christina and Dave) at 218-728-0808. Uwe Kausch relocated a LONG-TAILED DUCK at Brighton Beach in east Duluth on the 12th.

Frank Nicoletti found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 14th near the corner of Rice Lake Road (CR 4) and Airpark Road in Duluth. Frank found another NORTHERN HAWK OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog along CR 47, at the Aerie Lake Road. Two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS continue to be seen along CR 7 in the Sax-Zim Bog, one about 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road, and the other just north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Sandy Roggenkamp found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 14th along CR 133, 7 miles west of Meadowlands.

Two AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were found by Frank Nicoletti on the 14th along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 0.1 mile north of the Zim Road (CR 27). Kim Eckert also found BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the Nichols Lake Road, 1 mile west of US Highway 53; and along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 3.1 mi north of the Sax Road (CR 28). A feeding station along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) 1.2 miles north of CR 133 continues to host EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS, at least two HOARY REDPOLLS, and a BOREAL CHICKADEE. A flock of about 150 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continues to be seen near the Lutheran church in Meadowlands.

Dave Grosshuesch and Terry Hams found a male AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 14th along St. Louis County Road 16 at Jenkins Creek. Kim Eckert relocated the HARRIS'S SPARROW on the 16th in Two Harbors at 226 4th Avenue.

Warren Nelson and Butch Ukura found a SNOWY OWL on the 12th in Aitkin County along US Highway 169/MN Highway 210 at 370th Lane. They found another SNOWY OWL along CR 1, 5.7 miles north of the Mississippi River. They also found four SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along CR 18, 2.25 miles east of US Highway 169, an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER along CR 27, 3.7 miles south of Lawler, and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along Township Road 380 (330th Avenue), 2.1 miles south of 450th Street.

On the 12th, Shawn Conrad relocated two of the EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES at a residence in Grand Rapids.
