This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A BRANT was found by Lars Benson at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth on the 19th, and it has been seen every day through the 22nd. It is most often seen in the lawn in front of the concert stage, as well as in the harbor behind the stage.
Sparky Stensaas found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and two BOREAL CHICKADEES in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 19th along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.1 to 2.3 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Jan and John Green saw three HUDSONIAN GODWITS and three UPLAND SANDPIPERS on the 19th at the Arkola Road (CR 52) and CR 208. SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were also seen at this location on the 17th. YELLOW RAILS were found along the Stone Lake Road on the 17th, as well as at the Embarrass rice paddies.
A PIPING PLOVER was seen by several observers on the 17th at Hearding Island off Park Point. Mike Hendrickson found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD along on Clyde Avenue in the Smithville neighborhood of western Duluth on the 22nd, about a block from Grand Avenue. Alan Loken saw three BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, four WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on the 19th at 40th Avenue West.
Five WHIMBRELS were seen on the 21st at the boat channel entrance at the Knife River marina. Six LONG-TAILED DUCKS were found at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors on the 17th and two were still present on the 21st. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen as recently as the 21st on the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Two Harbors. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was reported on the 16th at the east end of the East Castle Danger Road. Peg Robertson saw and heard a flock of ten TRUMPETER SWANS overhead in Silver Bay on the 19th.
Several BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS were heard on the 22nd at the top of Oberg Mountain in Cook County. Kim Eckert had a migrant BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER about 100 yards east of the entrance to Chester Bowl along East Skyline Parkway in Duluth.
