This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 10th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found by Deb Falkowski on the 8th at Silver Lake in Virginia, and it was still present on the 10th. Peder Svingen saw a first-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and the adult SLATY-BACKED GULL at Wisconsin Point on the 6th on Allouez Bay and at the landfill. Also present were three THAYER'S GULLS, 15 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and more than 3,600 HERRING GULLS.

Peder found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at 37th Street on Park Point on the 7th, and it was relocated on the 9th within the recreational area. Peder counted 1,215 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 296 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 174 HOODED MERGANSERS on the 7th in the Duluth Harbor. On the 5th he saw a LONG-TAILED DUCK near Interstate Island and a CACKLING GOOSE near 27th Avenue West. Jan Green saw a CACKLING GOOSE on the 8th at the Two Harbors golf course. The female BLACK SCOTER at 27th Avenue West behind the WLSSD sewage treatment plant was still present on the 9th. CANVASBACKS were found near Interstate Island on the 4th, and were seen at the Sky Harbor Airport on the 10th. One was also seen on the 10th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.

There has been a strong movement of NORTHERN SHRIKES and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS through the area over the past few days. Individual shrikes are being seen all along the lakeshore and throughout the Duluth area, and several waxwing flocks have been seen in Duluth, Split Rock State Park, Tettegouche State Park, Two Harbors, and Chisholm.

Recent new arrivals in the area include EASTERN PHOEBE and SONG SPARROW on the 4th, RED-NECKED GREBE and HORNED GREBE on the 5th, NORTHERN FLICKER on the 7th, WOOD DUCK, NORTHERN SHOVELER, REDHEAD and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on the 8th, and TREE SWALLOW and FOX SPARROW on the 9th.
