This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, June 5th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Three RED KNOTS were seen by several observers on the 1st on the bay side of Park Point, between the recreational area soccer fields and the Sky Harbor Airport. Al and Nathan Schirmacher found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at the recreational area soccer fields on the 31st. Charlie Greenman and others saw a LARK SPARROW on the 31st at the parking lot of Bayfront Festival Park.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was relocated by Kim Eckert and others in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 5th along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.8 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Kim's group also found BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the McDavitt Road, 2.4 and 2.8 miles north of the Sax Road, as well as three singing CONNECTICUT WARBLERS. They saw SHARP-TAILED GROUSE at the intersection of the Arkola Road (CR 52) and CR 208 and along CR 7 a mile south of the Sax Road, and a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along the Sax Road, 0.25 mile west of CR 7. In Lake County, Kim’s group found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along CR 2, 100 yards north of the Sand River, and a BOREAL CHICKADEE along the Langley River Road, 0.6 mile west of CR 2 at the railroad tracks.

The GREAT GRAY OWL along Aitkin County Road 18 was relocated by the Minnesota Birding Weekends group on the 31st at the intersection of Pietz's Road (320th Place). Terry Brashear located what was possibly the same bird on the 1st about a half mile west of here on CR 18. At least four YELLOW RAILS were heard on the 31st in the McGregor Marsh on the east side of MN Highway 65 near mile marker 116, 0.6 mile south of MN Hwy 210. NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were also heard in the same area.
