This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 11th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Single MISSISSIPPI KITES flew over the main overlook at Hawk Ridge on the 8th and 9th, presumably representing two different individuals. A SWAINSON'S HAWK also flew over the Ridge on the 8th, as well as 12 SANDHILL CRANES and 6 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS. Eighteen AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen on the 9th. Raptor flights of more than 1,700 and 1,800 occurred on the 8th and 9th, respectively.

A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was reported on the 9th along the 1000 block of Maple Grove Road in Duluth. It was seen for about 20 minutes, but has not been relocated.

Shawn Zierman saw a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 6th near the lift bridge on Park Point, and another on the 7th on the ball fields at the recreational area. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was briefly seen at Agate Bay in Two Harbors on the 7th, and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was seen on the 11th at the Two Harbors golf course clubhouse ponds.

Shawn Conrad found a LARK SPARROW on the 9th on the east side of Grand Marais at the ACE hardware store. Shawn also saw a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER near the Coast Guard station and several HORNED GREBES on Lake Superior.
