This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 15th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found on the 10th by Kim Eckert on Lake Superior at 21st Avenue East, presumably the same individual seen in late December. Kim’s group also found a HOARY REDPOLL on the 10th and 11th near 38th Street on Park Point in Duluth. Mike Hendrickson relocated the female HOARY REDPOLL on the 15th at his feeders in Smithville in west Duluth. Carol Tveekrem found a HOARY REDPOLL on the 15th at her feeders in Schroeder, Cook County.
A FOX SPARROW has been present for the past month at the Duluth DNR office at 4805 Rice Lake Road (CR 4). Two AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are also occasionally seen at the feeder, which is visible from the parking lot. Gordy Martinson had a flock of eight BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at his home at Oak and Maxwell Street in north Duluth. Mike Hendrickson saw a first cycle ICELAND GULL, two adult and a first cycle THAYER'S GULL, and several GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 10th at the Superior landfill.
Mike found a BOREAL OWL on the 11th along the Old North Shore Road (CR 290) near the Alseth Road. A dead one was found in downtown Two Harbors on the 10th at 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street, and another was found on the 13th in Duluth near the UMD campus. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the Duluth International Airport was relocated on the 12th at Rice Lake Road (CR 4), 0.5 mile south of Airport Road. Mike Hendrickson relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL at Jean-Duluth Road (CR 37) and the Beyer Road (CR 259) on the 11th. He also found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 10th along MN Highway 61, 0.5 mile north of the Ryan Road (CR 50). A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found on the 14th along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.5 mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42).
Most of the species of interest in the Sax-Zim bog continue to be seen at the usual locations. Bill Tefft saw two GREAT GRAY OWLS on the 11th along the Nichols Lake Road (CR 232) about two miles east of CR 7. Jeff Fischer saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 10th along CR 7, 1.6 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Several observers reported the NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the weekend of the 10th along CR 7 within 0.5 mile of the Sax Road. Both AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen over the weekendalong the McDavitt Road, 3.5 miles north of the Sax Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES are still being seen at the “deer-rib feeding station” along the Admiral Road (CR 788) 4 miles north of the Sax Road. Andrew Longtin found a flock of more than 50 SNOW BUNTINGS along CR 133 at CR 199 near Meadowlands.
Bill Tefft and Norma Malinowski found flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS recently along Miner's Drive and at the east end of Sheridan Street in Ely. A TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE was found on the 9th near the Ely golf course along Lookout Ridge Road. An AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 8th and relocated on the 10th along the walking trail at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors. Shawn Conrad found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 9th in Itasca County along CR 456, 0.6 miles north of CR 72.
