This is the Duluth Birding Report for Friday, November 28th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An immature ICELAND GULL, an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, and several THAYER'S GULLS were seen on the 25th by Karl Bardon and Erik Bruhnke at Canal Park in Duluth. Peder Svingen saw an adult ICELAND GULL on the 22nd at Rice's Point in the Port Terminal across from the UPS building.

Matt Pierce saw a SNOWY OWL in the Grand Marais harbor on the 22nd, possibly the same bird that was reported about a month ago. Nate Pompkin reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 26th along US Highway 53 just south of Cotton. Dave and Sarah Grosshuesch saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 23rd along St. Louis County Road 16, 0.5 mile west of Reservoir Road. Dave also had a reliable second-hand report of a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 20th along CR 110 at the Shiver Creek impoundments.

Two LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 23rd at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008. The Two Harbors Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, December 14. Anyone interested in participating in either count should contact compiler Jim Lind at (218) 834-3199 or by e-mail at jslind@frontiernet.net
