This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 12th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was relocated by Larry and Jan Kraemer on the 6th just west of Leif Erickson Park in Duluth. Dean Grettinger saw an adult GLAUCOUS GULL on the 8th at the Canal Park ship canal. Dean also relocated the SNOWY OWL off Barker’s Island in Superior on the 9th.
SPRUCE GROUSE have been found in Lake County in good numbers during the past week. Mike Hendrickson found eight on the 11th along CR 2, 1 mile south of the Sand River. Along MN Highway 1 northwest of CR 2 he saw a bird 0.2 mile east of mile marker 305, a bird 0.3 mile west of mile marker 305, and two birds between mile markers 301 and 302. On the 7th, Mike saw five SPRUCE GROUSE along CR 2, 0.5 mile north of the Sand River, one bird 1 mile north of the Sand River, one bird 0.5 mile south of the School of Log Building, and three birds along MN Highway 1 between mile markers 301 and 302. Mike also saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 7th along CR 2 at Greenwood Lake.
In the Sax-Zim Bog, Mike found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 8th along the Stickney Road (CR 207), 1 mile north of the Arkola Road (CR 52). The NORTHERN HAWK OWL along CR 7 within 0.5 mile of the Sax Road (CR 28) continues to be seen, as well as the one along the McDavitt Road, 1.2 miles north of the Sax Road. Both AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS are still being seen along the McDavitt Road, 3.1 miles north of the Sax Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES and HOARY REDPOLLS are being seen at the feeding station along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 3.8 miles north of the Sax Road. Up to five BOREAL CHICKADEES have been seen at a feeder along the Arkola Road, a mile east of Owl Avenue. EVENING GROSBEAKS are being seen at the feeders along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) a mile north of CR 133.
Andy Paulios and others found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 5th along Aitkin County Road 18, 2-4 miles west of CR 5. They also saw a HOARY REDPOLL at the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, 5 miles south of McGregor on MN Highway 65.
