This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 8th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An apparent BAND-TAILED PIGEON flew by the Hawk Ridge overlook on the 7th. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and two GOLDEN EAGLES were seen on the 7th, and 137 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on the 3rd. Migrating BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen during the past week at Hawk Ridge, Gnesen Township, and in Two Harbors.
Two RED-THROATED LOONS were found on the 1st by Peder Svingen on Park Point at the 31st Street Lafayette Square access. Kim Eckert relocated them on the 5th at the Park Point Recreation Area, and also saw two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. Sparky Stensaas and Erik Bruhnke saw two WESTERN GREBES on the 7th at the first parking lot on Wisconsin Point.
Bill Tefft reported the first NORTHERN SHRIKE of the fall season on the 4th in Ely. Single RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were seen on September 29th at the Tower DNR office and on the 30th in Ely.
