This is the Duluth Birding Report for April 7th, 2011 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen by Bob Myers on April 1st and 2nd on Lake Superior at Silver Bay. They were seen from the beach southwest of the AmericInn and just east of the Northshore Mining plant.
An immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the 7th in the Duluth Harbor at the north end of the Bong Bridge. Shawn Conrad saw a THAYER'S GULL at Canal Park on the 2nd, as well as four LONG-TAILED DUCKS in Two Harbors. A flock of 14 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS was seen on the 6th by Frank Nicoletti at Wisconsin Point.
New arrivals in the area during the past week include TUNDRA SWAN, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GADWALL, RING-NECKED DUCK, SANDHILL CRANE, KILLDEER, TREE SWALLOW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and SNOW BUNTING.
