This is the Duluth Birding Report for April 20th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An adult GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen and photographed at a private residence in Fredenberg Township north of Duluth on the 19th. If arrangements for visitors to look for the bird can be made, I will pass that information along. This would be the 8th record for Minnesota and 3rd for St. Louis County.
Jan and Larry Kraemer saw 8 RED-THROATED LOONS fly by the mouth of the Lester River in east Duluth on the 18th and an adult male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on the 19th at the bus turnaround at the Park Point Recreation Area. Five BLACK SCOTERS were seen on the 17th at the bus turnaround and two were seen near 28th Street on the 19th. The Kraemers saw a flock of 23 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 14th at Indian Point in west Duluth. Peder Svingen counted more than 1,600 GREATER SCAUP and 500 LESSER SCAUP on the 15th in the Duluth Harbor at Park Point.
Mike Hendrickson saw a THAYER'S GULL and a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 18th at the Duluth Rowing Club on Park Point. Mike also saw a late flock of 25 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 19th at Woodridge Circle in the Kenwood neighborhood of Duluth.
New arrivals in the area during the past week include LESSER YELLOWLEGS, AMERICAN COOT, BROWN THRASHER, and SWAMP SPARROW.
