This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 3rd, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
As many as 11 RED-THROATED LOONS have been reported by several observers between the Park Point Recreation Area and Lafayette Square. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw four WILLETS flying over the lake at the Recreation Area on the 2nd. Peder Svingen saw two RED-THROATED LOONS on the 28th at Brighton Beach in east Duluth. Sarah Grosshuesch saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 1st at Juniata Street and 57th Avenue East in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth.
Peder Svingen saw an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN on the 1st at Knife Island in Lake County. Sharon Lind saw an EASTERN TOWHEE on the 3rd on the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Two Harbors.
New arrivals in the area during the past week include BROAD-WINGED HAWK, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, BONAPARTE'S GULL, CASPIAN TERN, COMMON TERN, FORSTER’S TERN, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, HOUSE WREN, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, LE CONTE’S SPARROW, HARRIS’S SPARROW, and BREWER’S BLACKBIRD.
