This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 7th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was seen by Chris Wood on 3rd as it flew southwest past Burlington Bay in Two Harbors, but it could not be relocated. Karl Bardon saw a flock of 11 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 4th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. Mike Hendrickson saw two SPRUCE GROUSE on the 6th along Lake County Road 2, two miles north of the Sand River.
BOREAL OWLS continue to be seen along the North Shore, especially along Scenic Highway 61 between Duluth and Knife River. Exact locations over the past week are too numerous to mention, but sightings in the past few days have come from Scenic 61 between Homestead Road and Alseth Road near Tom's Logging Camp, along East Superior Street a half mile east of McDonnell Road, and along Scenic 61 just east of the Lakewood Pumping Station. Recent searches along the shore northeast of Knife River have generally been less successful, with scattered reports as far north as Tofte.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is still being seen along the Martin Road (CR 9) on the north side of Duluth, about a quarter mile west of the Jean-Duluth Road. Another NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 3rd along US Highway 53 in Hermantown. Scattered large flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been reported, especially near Scenic 61 and the Lakewood Road, along Rice Lake Road near the old Duluth landfill, and at the north end of the Homestead Road six miles north of MN Highway 61.
Dave Grosshuesch saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 6th in Cook County along MN Highway 61, a mile south of the Cascade River. Another was seen on the 5th along CR 7 about seven miles west of Grand Marais, and one was photographed at Grand Portage on the 6th. GREAT GRAY OWLS are also being seen in the Sax-Zim Bog along the McDavitt Road about 3.5 miles north of the Sax Road.
The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS have been seen this week in Duluth out from Leif Erikson Park around 12th Avenue East. GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, THAYER’S GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and ICELAND GULLS are still being seen regularly at Canal Park.
