This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 28th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The KING EIDER was relocated by Mike Hendrickson on the 23rd along Scenic Highway 61, a quarter mile southwest of the Lakewood Road. Three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and more than 100 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen in the same area. Large flocks of LONG-TAILED DUCKS were also seen at Agate Bay and Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE along Oakley Street near 47th Avenue East in east Duluth was still present on the 24th. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were also seen here on the 24th. Cindy and Chris Edwardson saw a flock of 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 24th at East Arrowhead and Vermilion Road in Duluth.
Mike Hendrickson saw ten SPRUCE GROUSE on the 24th along Lake County Road 2, 0.3 mile north of Sand River. Sparky Stensaas saw four SPRUCE GROUSE on the 25th at mile marker 301.3 on MN Highway 1.
The most recent reports of BOREAL OWLS that I'm aware of were on the 23rd in Congdon Park in east Duluth, and on the 24th on the 100 block of 3rd Avenue in Two Harbors. A SNOWY OWL was seen on the 27th in the railroad yards in Two Harbors, west of the west end of 1st Avenue. Martin Reid found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 27th along the Admiral Road, a half mile north of the Cranberry Road. Other sightings have been along the Stone Lake Road, and along CR 7 about a mile north of the Sax Road. GREAT GRAY OWLS are being seen throughout northeastern Minnesota, especially along the North Shore.
