This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 16th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A LITTLE GULL was found by Al Loken on the 16th at Hearding Island on Park Point in Duluth. Kim Eckert also saw a late ICELAND GULL at the same location. A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen on the 15th by Frank Nicoletti and others at Wisconsin Point. Shawn Zierman saw an immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the 15th at Hearding Island on Park Point. Peder Svingen saw a MARBLED GODWIT on the 15th at the Duluth Port Terminal. Kim Eckert had an impressive total of 10 HARRIS'S SPARROWS at his feeders near UMD on the 15th.
Bob Dunlap saw a WESTERN GREBE on the 12th at the mouth of the Gooseberry River. The WESTERN GREBE at Flood Bay was still present on the 12th. Two BLACK SCOTERS, two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and eight LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 12th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. Kim Eckert saw nine BLACK SCOTERS, one SURF SCOTER, and one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on the 14th at the Duluth Rowing Club on Park Point. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw two SURF SCOTERS there on the 16th.
Butch Ukura and others saw a late TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 11th at Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, 0.5 mile west of MN Highway 65. Mike Hendrickson saw a small flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 14th in the Woodland neighborhood of Duluth and a small flock was seen on the 11th near Temperance River State Park in Cook County.
Recent spring arrivals in the past week include BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, CHIMNEY SWIFT, LEAST FLYCATCHER, HOUSE WREN, VEERY, TENNESSEE WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, INDIGO BUNTING, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
