This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 19th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found by Eric Collins on the 14th at Lafayette Square on Park Point and on the 15th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen by several observers on the 14th and 15th near the Sky Harbor Airport at Park Point.
Four GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found on the 9th by Greg Garmer at Bayfront Park in the Duluth Harbor and they were still present on the 17th. Karl Bardon briefly saw three ROSS'S GEESE at the mouth of the Lester River on the 13th.
A SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen at Hawk Ridge on the 16th, and two were seen on the 12th. Five RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were counted on the 11th, as well as a record-high count of 107 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. The first migrant DARK-EYED JUNCOS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported from Hawk Ridge on the 13th, and the first SNOW GEESE, HORNED LARK, and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from there on the 12th.
Karl Bardon saw a juvenile SABINE'S GULL at the first parking lot on Wisconsin Point on the 15th. Karl and Mike Hendrickson saw six PARASITIC JAEGERS on the 14th at Wisconsin Point.
