This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 24th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A juvenile SABINE'S GULL was found by Karl Bardon on the 20th at Canal Park in Duluth. Possibly the same individual was seen later in the day at the Superior Entry. A RED-THROATED LOON was also seen by several observers on the 20th at Canal Park. Sparky Stensaas found a RED-THROATED LOON here on the 22nd, as well as an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. Mike Hendrickson and Peder Svingen saw a first-cycle and a second-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and four THAYERS’S GULLS on the 18th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen there on the 20th by several observers.
A female-plumaged HARLEQUIN DUCK was found on the 24th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. A FIELD SPARROW and a LE CONTE'S SPARROW were seen in the fields south of the train depot in Two Harbors on the 24th. The immature ROSS’S GOOSE was seen as recently as the 22nd at the Two Harbors golf course.
Peder Svingen saw a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 21st along the Old North Shore Road just east of the Homestead Road.
Bill Tefft and others found a VARIED THRUSH on the 21st in Cook County near the intersection of CR 69 and MN Highway 61, just east of Naniboujou Lodge. They also saw three BLACK SCOTERS in the Grand Marais harbor on the 22nd.
