This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 28th, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Sharon Lind found a TUFTED TITMOUSE on the 25th in her yard west of Two Harbors at 847 Scenic Drive, but it has not been relocated since the 25th. This is the first record for Lake County and one of the few northern Minnesota records. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen on the 26th in Two Harbors at 10th Avenue and 4th Street. Another NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found by Tony Mitchell on the 24th in the Duluth Port Terminal.
Two RED KNOTS were found on the 28th by Jan and Larry Kraemer on Park Point near the Sky Harbor Airport. They were seen with RUDDY TURNSTONES, SANDERLINGS, DUNLIN, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. Dale Trexel and Jeff Eddy saw two WHIMBRELS on the 22nd on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Joshua Christian saw six WHIMBRELS on the 23rd at Knife Island in Lake County. He also saw a RUDDY DUCK on the 23rd near the Sky Harbor Airport.
Ruth Stearns saw a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER on the 22nd on the east side of Indian Point in west Duluth. Larry and Jan Kraemer also saw one on the 26th at Indian Point. Barb Akre saw an EASTERN TOWHEE on the 22nd along West Kent Street near the UMD campus. Mike Furtman saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 22nd in the Woodland neighborhood of Duluth, and one was seen by Jan and Larry Kraemer on the 24th at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
Jan and Larry Kraemer saw 23 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 22nd at the Lakewood Pumping Station. Laura Erickson saw three LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 23rd at the McQuade Road boat launch. LONG-TAILED DUCKS were also seen on the 22nd and 23rd in Cook County, but I don't have specific locations.
Doug Kieser and others heard several YELLOW RAILS on the 23rd at the McGregor Marsh along MN Highway 65 south of MN Highway 210 in Aitkin County.
