This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 10th, 2011 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A CLARK'S GREBE was found on the side of Lake County Road 2 about four miles north of Two Harbors on the 7th. It was brought to Wildwoods rehabilitation and then released on Lake Superior the next day. This is only the second record for northeastern Minnesota.
Richard Hoeg saw an amazing total of 30 SPRUCE GROUSE on the 8th along the Tomahawk Trail in northern Lake County. Most were seen between Inga Creek and Isabella Lake. Richard also saw at least two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS near the Isabella Lake BWCA entry point.
Peder Svingen and others saw the first-cycle CALIFORNIA GULL on the 6th at the Superior Entry. This is the same gull that was seen in the Duluth/Superior area in September. Peder also saw 15 THAYER'S GULLS on the 5th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry, and then soon after saw another six at Canal Park. GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, ICELAND GULL and GLAUCOUS GULLS are also still being seen at both locations.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, December 17th.
