This is the Duluth Birding Report for June 26th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD found by Linda Atella on the 13th at the Park Point Recreation Area was last reported on the 16th. This is only the second record for Minnesota and the first for St. Louis County. Scott Wolff saw eight RED-THROATED LOONS on the 24th at 43rd Street on Park Point. Tony Hertzel saw a RED-THROATED LOON and a RED-NECKED GREBE on the 25th at Stony Point.
The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at Agate Bay in Two Harbors was relocated on the 22nd by Linda Atella. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at Agate Bay on the 20th.
Clinton Nienhaus saw two LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 22nd at Good Harbor Bay in Cook County. He also saw an out-of-range SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in Lake County on the 13th far off road in the Sand Lake Peatland SNA, and he saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 25th along the Watsula Road in the Sax-Zim Bog.
Kim Eckert saw a SPRUCE GROUSE with four chicks on the 22nd in Lake County along the Stony River Forest Road, 1.4 miles south of the Whyte Road. Another SPRUCE GROUSE was seen on the 26th along the Whyte Road, 0.4 mile east of the Stony River Forest Road.
Julie Grahn found a CONNECTICUT WARBLER on the 21st along the Johnson Road east of Cook in northern St. Louis County. CONNECTICUT WARBLERS have also been reported recently from the Sax-Zim Bog along Owl Avenue just south of the Overton Road, and along the McDavitt Road. Bob Myers found a CONNECTICUT WARBLER in Lake County on the 18th along the Stony River Forest Road, 1.5 miles north of the Whyte Road.
Denny and Barb Martin found GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS in Cook County at the Mt. Josephine overlook near Grand Portage and near the Lima Mountain Road. Bob Williams found two BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS on the 17th at Oberg Mountain in Cook County.
Shawn Conrad photographed an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL in Itasca County on the 15th at Trout Lake.
