This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 23rd, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
As many as 12 SABINE'S GULLS have been reported from Wisconsin Point and the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry over the past week. Daryl Tessen, Robbye Johnson and others saw 12 at Lot 1 at the base of Wisconsin Point on the 20th. Mike Hendrickson saw four juveniles in Minnesota waters on the 21st, and these same birds were seen from Lot 1 on Wisconsin Point on the same day. At least one SABINE’S GULL was still being seen at Lot 1 on the 23rd.
Several other species of interest have been reported at Wisconsin Point, some of which have or could potentially wander into Minnesota waters. As many as six PARASITIC JAEGERS of various ages have been seen, as well as an adult and a first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, up to nine FRANKLIN'S GULLS, three BLACK TERNS, two AMERICAN AVOCETS, a RED-THROATED LOON, two SURF SCOTERS and two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS.
Eight SWAINSON'S HAWKS have been seen at Hawk Ridge since the 17th, bringing the seasons total to 13. More than 24,000 warblers of 16 species were seen on the 19th, and a GREAT EGRET was seen on the 17th.
Bob Myers saw a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 20th and 21st at the Black Beach picnic area in Silver Bay. A DICKCISSEL was seen on the 20th in Two Harbors at a ground feeder at South Avenue and Waterfront Drive. Chris Wood and Jesse Barry's also had a flyover DICKCISSEL on the 17th at Gull Bluff near Wisconsin Point.
