This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 20th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Spring migration seems to be in full swing, just in time for Saturday's Hawk Ridge Birdathon:

A SUMMER TANAGER showed up at the jelly feeder of Don Keinholz, and was still present on Tuesday.

Scott Wolff saw five RED-THROATED LOONS on Sunday the 16th, and at least one was seen by Peder Svingen on Monday.

Peder also found a PIPING PLOVER on the beach near the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point on Monday, as well as the spring's first LITTLE GULL, which was seen with the large flock of BONAPARTE'S GULL. The LITTLE GULL was seen again on Tuesday.

An adult male RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been in the trees near the boat landing at Park Point since Sunday; it was present there this morning.

Frank Nicolletti saw a WESTERN KINGBIRD flying by Enger Tower on the 19th. He also saw an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN this week. Ten pelicans were seen at Wisconsin Point this week.

Two MARBLED GODWITS have been feeding on the soccer field at Park Point this week; other shorebirds seen recently include WILLET, SANDERLING, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, DUNLIN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and UPLAND SANDPIPER.

Migrants reported for the first time this week include INDIGO BUNTING, VESPER SPARROW, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

GRAY JAYS have been seen with juveniles. They are early nesters, and it is right on schedule to see the young at this time of year.

This tape will be updated again tomorrow, Friday, May 21st, in order to provide the few stake-outs there are to the 20 teams who will be participating in the Birdathon. The tape will be updated again on Sunday the 23rd to announce the results of the Birdathon.

If you have birds to report, please leave a message after the tone, or call me, Dave Benson, directly, at 218-728-5812.
