This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 24th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The TUFTED DUCK is still being seen at the Blue Lake settling ponds just east of Shakopee. The ponds are located on the north side of Scott County Road 101 one mile west of U.S. highway 169.
On the 20th there was a possible SAGE THRASHER seen in Edina, Hennepin County, but the bird has not been seen since the 21st. I will update this tape with any further information as I receive it.
A HOARY REDPOLL has been visiting the feeder of Karen Sussman in the town of Brit, St. Louis County. It was seen as recently as February 21st.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen on February 20th at a cabin just south of Rutledge along the Kettle River in Pine County near Banning State Park.
In St. Louis County a GREAT GRAY OWL was reported one along County Road 202 one mile north of Correction Line Road. On February 21st a Great Gray Owl was seen along Aitkin County Road 18, two and one half miles east of U.S highway 169, and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen on this same road at its junction with Pietz's Road. John Richardson reported both SHORT-EARED OWL and NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL along Aitkin County Road 18 last weekend. And a Saw-whet was heard calling in Veteran's Park in Richfield on the 17th. This is at the junction of 66th Street and Portland Avenue. A SNOWY OWL was reported on February 17th just south of Fergus Falls, but I have no further directions other than the location was about four miles west of the Town of Wendell in Grant County.
Brandy Manfield found a COMMON SNIPE on the 22nd near the first pond west of the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge in Bloomington, Hennepin County.
On the 19th Mark Citsay reported a PEREGRINE FALCON in Stillwater, Washington County, on state highway 36 & Greeley North. Another was seen along I-394 and state highway 100 in Minneapolis on the 22nd. A PRAIRIE FALCON was seen by Dave Zumeta at a grain elevator along Dight Ave. between 34th and 35th Street in south Minneapolis on February 23rd. Dight is one block east of Hiawatha Ave.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in Lyon County on the 17th at Lines WMA southwest of Cottonwood. And a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was on the east side of Twin Lake in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County on the February 17th, and another was in a Wildlife Management Area just southeast of Faribault along Rice County Road 21. Other birds reported mostly from the southern parts of the state include SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, HORNED LARK, AMERICAN ROBIN, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, COMMON GRACKLE, PINE SISKIN, and COMMON REDPOLL.
