This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 22nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Jim Lind found three BOREAL OWLS on the 19th, all northeast of Duluth. One was at Brighton Beach which is located just past the mouth of the Lester River. It was seen in a spruce tree on the north side of Scenic Highway 61. The second owl was at the Lake Breeze Motel along Scenic Highway 61 at 90th Avenue E. The third was also along Scenic Highway 61, two miles south of its intersection with the expressway at the west end of Two Harbors.
Doug Johnson found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Clearwater County on the 17th. It was on county road 26 about three miles west of county road 2. Two Hawk Owls were still in the Sax-Zim bog area of St. Louis County on the 18th. Both were along county road 7 north of county road 52.
A SNOWY OWL was found on the 22nd in Sibley County, one mile south of the junction of county roads 7 and 22.
Oscar Johnson counted 215 BALD EAGLES along the Mississippi River between Colville Park in Goodhue County and Wabasha, Wabasha County.
Flip Rogers found a covey of six GRAY PARTRIDGE in Scott County along state highway 282 two miles east of the town of Jordan.
And WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are over-wintering in downtown Minneapolis on the grounds of the Government Center. As many as four were seen there on the 21st.
