This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday May 3rd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
I have a second-hand report of a WHITE-FACED IBIS seen April 30th in Marshall County. DNR officials reported it one mile north of Thief Lake Headquarters on the east side of Marshall County road 49 but it was not found later in the day.
All of the common vireos have now been reported in the state. On April 29th Steve Carlson found a WHITE-EYED VIREO at Cedar Lake in Minneapolis. This was on the east side of the lake, about a hundred yards north of the intersection of Burnham Rd. and Burnham Blvd. Several people looked unsuccessfully for this bird later in the day. Another White-eyed Vireo was reported from the Bass Ponds area of Bloomington, Hennepin County, but no specific location was offered.
Most of the warblers have been reported now, with only the few later migrants yet to be found. A KENTUCKY WARBLER was found at the Litchfield Nature Center in Meeker County on the 29th. No specific location was given but you can call Dan Floren of Litchfield for additional information. On May 1st Lane Elwanger reported a WORM-EATING WARBLER in the wooded area on the east side of Veterans Park in Minneapolis, between the foot trail and the bike path. I also have reports of BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, OVENBIRD, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, and CERULEAN WARBLER.
In Duluth, two RED-THROATED LOONS were found on April 30th at the public access to Lake Superior on Park Point at 22nd St. Another was seen near the community center at 31st St.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was found in Hennepin County on the 3rd. It was found east of Diamond Lake along Zanzibar Ave. and just north of the Dayton town hall.
A SNOWY EGRET was seen at the East Landfill Reservoir near Rochester, Olmsted County, on the 29th.
Jon Little reported a large flock of WILLETS in Rice County just northwest of the town of Faribault. More than 70 birds were just west of the intersection of Douglas Ave. and 195th St. on May 1st. As many as 53 Willets were counted at the Lewiston sewage ponds in Winona County on the 1st.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK was on Salt Lake, Lac Qui Parle County, on April 28th, but several people watched it depart later that day.
On the 28th, there was a CLARK'S GREBE on Long Lake in Meeker County. It was seen just northwest of the public access on the west shore. Long Lake is west of Litchfield and south of Grove City.
On the 26th a CATTLE EGRET was seen briefly at the southern end of Wood Lake Nature Center in Minneapolis.
Sparrows are turning up now in good numbers, and I have many reports of such species as CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and SAVANNAH SPARROW. INDIGO BUNTINGS are also being reported from many locations while ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS and BALTIMORE ORIOLES have been commonly reported since the first sightings on April 28th.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday May 10th.
