This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Wednesday, July 17th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The BAIRD'S SPARROW first reported on June 18th is still at the Glacial Ridge project in Polk County. Directions to the site are to go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Highway 2 from its junction with State Highway 32, then turn south onto the gravel pit road. Go past the office and follow the left road southeast a total distance of one mile from Highway 2. The sparrow sings on the west side of the road between the road and the large concrete slab.

On July 14th, John Richardson found a second Baird's Sparrow also in Polk County. Directions to this bird are to go west on Polk County Road 45 about 2.8 miles from its junction with State Highway 32. The bird is on the south side of the road. A pink flag has been placed in the vicinity of the bird's territory to help with location.

Two WHITE-FACED IBIS are being seen in Meeker County near the town of Cedar Mills. Drive west of town on state highway 7 for two and a quarter miles to 600th Avenue, or Meeker County Road 35. Turn north and drive a couple hundred yards. One bird seen was on each side of the road. They were first seen by Steve Stucker on July 13th and at least one bird was still present on the 17th.

On July 13th a WHITE-EYED VIREO was discovered at Great River Bluffs State Park in Winona County. The bird was found along the hiking trail that runs southeast of the park's main road about a quarter of a mile beyond the King's Bluff Parking Area. Walk a short distance southeast along the trail until you come to a T intersection. The bird was seen in the large thickets at south end of this intersection.

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen on July 6th, 7th, and 14th sitting atop the Amboy water tower south of Mankato, Blue Earth County.

Tom Tustison reported a total of 12 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES in a four-mile stretch of road centered around 180th and Fischer in north central Dakota County.

At the Sleepy Eye sewage lagoons in Brown County, the following shorebirds were reported by Brian Smith on July 15th: LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.

And finally, Dave Thurston found as many as seven RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS on July 15th at the Cedar Creek SNA in northern Anoka County. The birds were along the west side of northeast Grant Street.
