On the 26th, Anthony Hertzel and Peder Svingen found a CINNAMON TEAL, a WHIMBREL, and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Crookston sewage ponds in Polk County. They also located two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on state highway 310 north of Roseau, Roseau County. Both birds were seen between mile posts 8 and 9.
Carol and Jim Tveekrem sound a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER a half mile west of the Split Rock River on U.S. Highway 61 in Lake County on the 25th.
Roger Everhardt found a LITTLE BLUE HERON at the Bass Ponds area of Bloomington, Hennepin County on the 29th. It was seen out on Long Meadow Lake from the main trail at about marker #7.
Five RED-THROATED LOONS were on Lake Superior off the Park Point Recreation Area in Duluth on the 29th.
On the 28th, a pair of BELL'S VIREOS was at the McCarthy Lake WMA in Wabasha County.
Tim Blackwood found a HOODED WARBLER on May 24th at Diamond Point Park on the western shore of Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County. It was across from the Bemidji State University campus on Birchmont Drive NE. This constitutes a first county record. Another Hooded Warbler was seen at the east end of Medicine Lake in Hennepin County on the 24th, along 34th Avenue North about two and a half blocks east of the lake. A singing Hooded Warbler was at Seven Mile Creek County Park in Nicollet County on the 26th. It was heard by Paul Hertzel along Trail #2. Several CERULEAN WARBLERS were also in the area.
A CATTLE EGRET was still at the 140th Street marsh in Dakota County on the 29th, and an AMERICAN AVOCET was at the Louisville Swamp in Scott County on the 25th.
Interesting was the late report of a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on the south shore of Spring Lake in Scott County on May 30th.
On the 28th a SUMMER TANAGER was seen by Nels Thompson in his yard near Owatonna, Steel County. Please call the Statewide Birding Report for directions.
I have a report of a MISSISSIPPI KITE from May 25th at Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Scott County but no specific location or other information.
There were several additional interesting birds that were seen briefly over the past week without staying around long enough for anyone else to get a chance to see them. A LAZULI BUNTING was in Battle Lake, Otter Tail County on the 26th; another was seen in Meeker County for just a few minutes later in the week; and a PAINTED BUNTING was seen for just a few hours in Wright County on the 27th. If any of these birds are relocated, this report will be updated immediately. I also have several reports of BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
