This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, April 3rd 2008.

There was a female-plumaged BLACK SCOTER seen on the 2nd on Lake Superior behind the sewage treatment plant in Duluth. It was visible from outside the gate at the end of 27th Avenue West.

Very early was the SEMIPALMATED PLOVER reported on March 30th at the 180th Street marsh in Dakota County. This is more than three weeks earlier than their typical arrival date.

More extraordinary was the reported WHIMBREL from March 27th, seen by a visiting birder at the marina of Brown's Creek on the north side of Stillwater in Washington County. The median arrival date for this species in Minnesota is May 17th.

A VARIED THRUSH was reported on the 29th in Wayzata, Hennepin County. The bird was apparently a migrant and was present for only a few minutes.

I now have reports of GREAT EGRET, COMMON LOON, PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S SNIPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, FRANKLIN'S GULL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, AMERICAN PIPIT, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, SWAMP SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, April 10th 2008.
