This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 18th 2008.
On December 18th, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found the Mississippi River at the Red Wing wastewater treatment facility in Goodhue County. This is about a quarter of a mile upriver from the power plant. A HARLEQUIN DUCK has been near here since the 12th at the Point Douglas area of Washington County under the railroad bridge.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found on the 18th at the junction of St. Louis County Roads 28 and 7. In Koochiching County, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was along U.S. Highway 71 just south of Big Falls and another was just north of Little Fork. And a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 13th at the entrance to the Duluth International Airport at the north end of Haines Road. Five NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were along state highway 72 between Lake of the Woods County Road 77 and the Beltrami County town of Waskish. Another was on Shoreline Drive north of Upper Red Lake, and one was along Beltrami County Road 40 northeast of Waskish. In Lake of the Woods County, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL can be seen two miles north of the Faunce-Butterfield Road along the Roosevelt Road. In Roseau County, four NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were north of the town of Roseau. Three of these were along state highway 310 and one on the Sprague Creek Road. A GREAT GRAY OWL was also seen along highway 310. Another GREAT GRAY OWL is in the Sax-Zim Bog area of St. Louis County along Nichols Lake Road, a mile and a half east mile of St. Louis County Road 7. A GREAT GRAY OWL can be seen on West Melrude Road, a mile and a half east of U.S. Highway 53. A GREAT GRAY OWL is along the East Melrude Road, about two miles north of St. Louis County Road 52. In Beltrami County, a GREAT GRAY OWL was near Hines on the 11th, between Blackduck and Tenstrike. On the 13th, one was along Itasca County Road 10, just south of County Road 445.
A SNOWY OWL has been at the Minneapolis / St. Paul airport since the 13th, across from the glycol facility on Cargo Road.
In Itasca County, Sherry Miner had a CAROLINA WREN visit her home on Wabana Lake on the 12th.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE is still at the Ann Lake campground of Sherburne NWR in Sherburne County. It was most recently reported on the 17th. A VARIED THRUSH is still in Ely, St. Louis County, along the 1200 block of Main Street.
