This is the Minnesota Birding Report for April 7th, 2011.

Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were found by Bob Myers on April 1st and he saw them again on the 2nd on Lake Superior at Silver Bay, Lake County. They were seen from the beach just east of the Northshore Mining plant. Four LONG-TAILED DUCKS were in Two Harbors, Lake County on the 7th.

On April 6th, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was reported by Laura Coble at the Randolph Industrial Park in Dakota County, near the pond behind the church.

As bodies of water open up and become free of ice across the southern half of the state, hundreds of ducks, geese, mergansers, loons, and herons have moved in and many other birds are being reported along the shores. A few new to the list of spring migrants include OSPREY, PIED-BILLED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PURPLE MARTIN, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, CHIPPING SPARROW, FIELD SPARROW, and HARRIS'S SPARROW. The next scheduled update of this tape is April 14th, 2011.
