The recent cold snap across the state has cetrainly slowed migratrion, but still a few new arrivals have been reported to make the past week interesting.

Craig Menze reported a RED-NECKED GREBE on April 6th from Kanabec County. On the 10th both RED-NECKED and EARED GREBES were found by Dave Thurston on Otter Tail Lake in Ramsey County.

A ROSS' GOOSE was in Jackson County on April 9th, one mile north and one half mile east of the junction of county road 62 and state highway 9.

BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were found in Golden Valley on April 2nd. Two birds were at a pond on Jersey Ave. south and Laurel Ave.

PEREGRINE FALCONS returned to the Ford bridge over the Mississippi River in south Minneapolis / St. Paul. Dave Zumeta found a pair at this location on April 4th.

Tim Voss found a very early and far north COMMON MOORHEN at Oakdale Park in Oakdale, Washington County on April 5th. Park at the gate at the end of 45th street and walk down the dirt road to the blacktop trail. The bird was found in the large pond found on the left.

Shorebirds are arriving slowly. On April 2nd Jay Hamernick found a LESSER YELLOWLEGS along the Vermillion River near the town of Hastings on the Dakota - Goodhue County line. They were also reported from Kanabec County on the 6th. GREATER YELLOWLEGS were reported from Freeborn County on April 9th and near Brownsville in Houston County on the 8th. On April 3rd Bob Ekblad found six GREATER YELLOWLEGS along with twenty COMMON SNIPE in a flooded field west of the town of Rochester on Olmsted county road 25. Nineteen COMMON SNIPE seen in a field in Scott County, just west of the junction of county roads 27 and 84.

Blaine Seeliger reported a GLAUCOUS GULL from the Bayport marina in Washington County. This may be one of the birds reported recently from just south of here at Spring Lake in Dakota County.

An injured SNOWY OWL was picked up in Mower County on April 4th. On April 8th Ron Silverman found a SHORT-EARED OWL in Olmsted County in a field one mile east of the junction of county roads 25 and 3. On the 4th Nancy Overcott found an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in Fillmore County on County Road 23 near the town of Newberg.

Jane Arndt found the first BARN SWALLOWS of the year. Two birds were at the Old Cedar Ave bridge in Bloomington on March 30th.

Craig Mandel reported a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD in Jackson County on April 9th. The bird was at the intersection of U.S. 71 and Jackson County road 4.

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were at Hok-si-la Park near Lake City in Goodhue County on April 2nd, at Black Dog Park in Dakota County on the 7th and in Fillmore County on the 4th.

The first SAVANNA SPARROW of the year was found near George Watch Lake in Anoka County on April 10th. Ron Selbitschka reported several singing VESPER SPARROWS near the town of Coates in Dakota County on April 2nd. An extremely early flock of CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS was reported April 6th two miles north of the town of Alden in Freeborn County by Al Batt.

Among other recent migrants reported in good numbers are COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, GREAT EGRET, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, WINTER WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, SONG SPARROW and HARRIS' SPARROW.
