This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 18th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On Lake Winibigoshish in Cass and Itasca counties Peder Svingen and Karen Sussman counted a total of 655 COMMON LOONS on September 14th, including a single group of 235 about a mile northeast of the town of Bena. A total of 1565 BONAPARTE'S GULL was also counted. Another count by Tom Peterson on the 18th produced 92 loons in a flock near Tamarack Point.
About a hundred AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were counted by Tom Lewanski along the Mississippi River near Hastings on the 17th.
Those five ROSS' GOOSE reported last week from the Beaver Bay sewage ponds on Lake County Road 4 were still present as recently as the 14th.
On September 17th a single day record total of 87 OSPREY was counted at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve in Duluth, St. Louis County. Additionally, more than 1800 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS plus 20,000 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen.
Shorebird reports have been disappointingly scarce this week. The only observations I know of are from Duluth, where Terry Brashear discovered a single RED KNOT on September 13th and 14th along the beach at Park Point at the south 12th Street access. Craig Mandle found 30 SANDERLINGS here on the 17th. He also reports twenty-three AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at the recreation area of Park Point, plus LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the 40th Ave West mudflats area.
Oscar Johnson found a lingering LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in the athletic field near 89th and Zane Avenue in Brooklyn Park on September 16th.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was in Craig Menze's yard in Mora, Kanabec County on the 15th as was an early HARRIS' SPARROW. And WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS have been seen at a number of feeders in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
