This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday March 4th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A GREAT BLUE HERON was seen March 1st by Ken Lafond at the Centerville Lake dam near Centerville in Anoka County.
Greg Sherlock called in to report a pair of OLDSQUAW seen on February 25th just below the Coon Rapids dam in Anoka and Hennepin counties. These birds were first seen on the 23rd by Karl Bardon, and were reported again on March 2nd by Oscar Johnson and on March 4th by Karen Coby.
Steve Millard reports finding a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on February 28th in both Lac Qui Parle and Traverse counties. He also found six RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the Rice Lake dam in Swift County, and seven somewhat early GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in Big Stone County at the Big Stone NWR.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was found by Warren Nelson on March 1st along Aitkin County Road 18 about 2.9 miles east of U.S. highway 169. At the three mile mark on county road 18 he found 12 BOREAL CHICKADEES and some WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. And Warren saw a SHORT-EARED OWL along Aitkin County Road 10 about a quarter of a mile south of its junction with county road 18.
Several BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are reportedly being seen around the towns of Champlin in northern Hennepin County and Aitkin in Aitkin County.
Other migrants reported as moving into the state in the past week include LESSER SCAUP, NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK -- seen at Nicols fen on the east side of Black Dog Lake in Dakota County and at the Coon Rapids dam -- RUDDY DUCK, and NORTHERN SHRIKE.
